Undaunted Legend by Carol Mersch  UNDAUNTED

Reverend John Maxwell Stout was impervious to the obstacles confronting him when he and his 40,000 member Apollo Prayer undertook to land the first Bible on the Moon. He forged ahead with the same passion and audacity that took him from the battle fields of World War II, to the missionary jungles of Brazil, and an unlikely friendship with a young Senator, Lyndon B. Johnson, chairman of the US Space Aeronautics Committee, who provided surveillance data that enabled him to take the first clear photo of Sputnik ever taken.

He garnered six degrees in science and theology and a PhD in Linguistics. He befriended astronauts and dignitaries from around the world, including George HW Bush, Brazil’s leader Juscelino Kubachek, Norman Vincent Peale, and Walter Cronkite, and was active in stifling renowned atheist Madalyn O’Hair’s suit against NASA to halt astronauts’ religious acts in space. In February 1971 his league succeeded in landing the first Bible on the moon onboard Apollo 14.

And all of his life—every step of the way—was the heart and soul of everything he lived for. Her name was Helen.

Reverend John Stout is a name you should remember.

The Apostles of Apollo by Carol Mersch THE APOSTLES OF APOLLO (2009)
The Journey of the Bible to the Moon and the Untold Stories of American Astronauts

By Carol Mersch

When NASA scientist and Chaplain John Stout accepted a position in the Apollo program at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, he said he would stay for one year—no more.

All that changed on January 27, 1967, when Apollo 1 astronaut Ed White II died with his crewmates in a flash fire on the launch pad. Reverend Stout, a chaplain to many of the astronauts, had grown close to White and knew the young astronaut planned to carry a Bible to the moon.

Stout vowed to stay on and see White’s dream fulfilled. However, undertaking a religious endeavor in the midst of a government space program was not an easy task. Among his obstacles was a lawsuit launched by renowned atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair against NASA to prevent religious acts in space. It fell to Stout and the Apollo Prayer League to find a way.

The result was an extraordinary drama that unfolded behind the scenes as Stout and the astronauts undertook to land the first Bible on the moon.

REFLECTIONS OF THE MOON (Previously THE SPACE LESS TRAVELED)
Retrospections on Earth, Mankind and War
By Apollo 14 Astronaut Edgar Mitchell

Compiled by Carol Mersch

A collection of insights on earth, love, conflict, and hope from the archives of the extraordinary and controversial Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell. On January 31, 1971 Mitchell embarked on a journey into outer space that resulted in his becoming the sixth man to walk on the Moon. The Apollo 14 mission was NASA’s third manned lunar landing. As he hurtled earthward through the abyss between the two worlds, Mitchell became engulfed by a profound sensation—a sense of universal connectedness. He intuitively sensed that his presence and that of the planet in the window were all part of a deliberate universal process—and that the glittering cosmos itself was somehow conscious. The experience was so overwhelming, that Mitchell knew that his life would never be the same.

His perspectives of life on earth, the useless ravages of war, and our individual the power to make a difference have changed little since his historic walk on another planet. You will find in these pages poignant introspections, profound insights, and harsh observations from a voyager who has journeyed beyond the ordinary reaches of space and mind.

Mitchell passed away February 4, 2016, on the eve of the 45th anniversary of his Apollo 14 moon mission. Reflections has been updated to include quotations obtained since his passing.

"As tiny as our physical bodies are on the scale of the universe, our minds can reach out to become one with all that is."

___________________________________

Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell was not your ordinary test pilot or average thinker. As an extraordinary scientist with a PhD from MIT an a reported IQ of 180, this generally quiet, self-deprecating man with a reputation for confounding his fellow astronauts and television commentators with theories of intelligent life outside earth’s boundaries, he returned from the moon with a vastly broader mental reach than the limited sense of the cosmos he left behind. His perspectives of life on earth, the useless ravages of war, and our individual power to make a difference have changed little since his historic walk on the surface of another world. You will find in these pages a selection of profound observations gleaned from a voyager who has journeyed far beyond the ordinary reaches of space and mind into The Space Less Traveled.
